Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, used as a preservative to dilute or dissolve other injectable medications, allowing for multiple withdrawals from the vial without bacterial contamination, unlike single-use sterile water. It’s essential for safely preparing drugs for injection (IV, IM, SC) but is contraindicated in neonates and for large-volume fluid replacement.
